Surfrider Foundation to Honor California State Parks with Clean Water Award

May 2, 2011 – San Diego, Calif. – In recognition of their longstanding efforts to preserve and protect our beaches, Surfrider Foundation San Diego County Chapter has named State Parks San Diego Coast District its “Organization of the Year”. The Clean Water Award will be presented at the 11^th Annual Art Gala held at The Powerhouse in Del Mar on Thursday May 19th. Surfrider is recognizing State Parks San Diego Coast District for their efforts in protecting and preserving the beaches within San Diego's State Parks including Leucadia State Beach, known to surfers and beach lovers as “Beacon’s”, and South Cardiff State Beach which includes the surf breaks of “Seaside” and ”Tabletops”. Over the years, the threats of erosion have put pressure on State Parks to alter the shoreline in these parks with seawalls. State Parks adopted a General Plan in 1983 recognizing that erosion is a natural condition. The plan also recognized that shoreline characteristics, recreational access and visual aspects unique to the shoreline must be maintained and restored. Over the last decade State Parks San Diego has worked towards these goals:

· In South Cardiff State Beach, State Parks has denied repeated requests to use State Park Land for seawalls to protect private residences in Solana Beach.

· State Parks and the State of California fought a lawsuit opposing such a denial and prevailed.

· At Beacons, State Parks opposed the City of Encinitas Plan to build a seawall in front of the trail to beach and instead redirected the City to use these funds on a more sustainable project.

· State Parks Lifeguards and Rangers protect the Parks and Beaches for surfers, fisherman and other beach users.

“Preventing seawalls on State Parks has maintained the bluffs in their natural state while neighboring cities have walled what is left of this precious resource. Many of these cities have allowed seawalls on Public Land zoned for Parks and Recreation. In sharp contrast, State Parks is maintaining and enhancing its beaches for all,” said Jim Jaffee, campaign manager for Surfrider’s Beach Preservation committee. “We hope the general public understands the value and efforts of this public agency.”

Accepting the award at the Art Gala will be honored guests, Brian Ketterer, Sector Superintendent, San Diego Coast District - North Sector California State Parks and Jim Bilz, State Park Lifeguard Supervisor.

Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter is committed to clean water and costal preservation from the beaches in Camp Pendleton in the north to the border across the Tijuana Sloughs in the south. To fund its programs, the organization depends on proceeds from the Annual Art Gala fundraiser. This year’s event is scheduled for Thursday, May 19 at the Del Mar Powerhouse. "Adrift" Sculpture by Neal Bociek

"Adrift" is part of a new body of works entitled Clear that are a series of kinetic sculptures combining the harshness of metal with the delicate nature of glass and water. Although the sculpture is fun and colorful, at its core, Clear is about protection and preservation of water, our most precious natural resource.

Neal Bociek is a public artist who lives and works in San Diego, California. Neal Bociek graduated from the University of Notre Dame where he obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in sculpture. Since then, he has been working and exhibiting his art in many locations with two current outdoor public exhibitions in San Diego. Neal won the Orchid Award from the San Diego Architectural Foundation for his work entitled Landsailers, currently on display in ten locations from Pacific Beach to La Jolla, California. January 3rd, 2011 – Del Mar, Calif. – Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter is happy to announce the date for the 11th Annual Art Gala. The event will be on Thursday, May 19 from 6 to 10 p.m. at The Powerhouse Community Center in Del Mar, 1658 Coast Blvd. Set in a picture perfect oceanfront setting, the gala will feature beautiful art, delectable food and drink, musical entertainment and coastal conservation highlights.

Attendees of this environmentally inspired event will enjoy silent and live auctions of unique ocean-themed artwork from renowned local and national artists, in addition to one-of-a-kind surfboards. Recent featured artists include Andy Davis, Jason Samarin, Wade Koniakowsky, Jeff Yeomans, Neil Bociek, Jay Alders, Josh Agle (Shag), Stephen King, Donald Miralle, Skye walker, Seth Thompson, Kevin Roche, Susan Wickstrand-Roche, Myles McGuiness, Robb Havassy and many more. #1 - "Hawaiian Manini" - A school of manini fish pass over a coral reef at Hanauma Bay on January 15, 2005 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Many coral reefs are dying from water pollution (from sewage and agricultural runoff), dredging off the coast, careless collecting of coral specimens, and sedimentation. The photographer freedived about 40 feet with an underwater housing and fins to capture this image. 16"X36" Panoramic Print mounted on gatorboard and with a custom handmade frame by the artist.

#2 - "Duck-Dive" - An unknown surfer duck dives a wave at the local spot "Windmills" during large storm surf in Hawaii January 6, 2005 in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii. This photo was part of the photographers portfolio that won First Place in World Press Photo Contest, Pictures of the Year and Best of Photojournalism, sweeping all the contests in the sports catagory for the first time in history. A 12" X 18" Archival Matted and Signed Print in a 23" X 29" frame.

#3 - "School of Man" - The Mass Start for the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon World Championships on October 5th 2009 in Kona, Hawaii. This photo was awarded "Sports Illustrated Pictures of the Year in 2009" as well as being part of a story by the photographer that won First Place at the World Press Photo Contest in 2010 in Amsterdam. A 12" X 18" Archival Matted and Signed Print in a 23" X 29" frame.

"Raindrop" Surfboard

The piece being donated, Raindrop, is a 6 channel single fin shaped by Hank Warner. Hank won the Shaper's Choice award last year at the Billabong Art of Shaping event in San Diego. The award is peer selected from the heritage shaping community of San Diego.

The art on Raindrop, by Greg Webster, is pigmented resin and fiberglass inlays. Each drop of water and each ray of sun is an individual piece of fiberglass cloth, individually layed up and tinted or opaqued. The circle splatters on the water are brushed resin and the surface of the water is a resin tint. The piece has been finished just as if it was a production board, being ground and sanded back flat, and then glossed and polished. The piece is finished with resin pinlines.

At the 10th Annual Art Gala, the Surfrider Foundation is honoring musician Jason Mraz, local business Cali Bamboo and Encinitas Deputy Mayor Maggie Houlihan the organization’s prestigious Clean Water Award. The coveted award is presented once a year to local environmental heroes who have made significant contributions towards helping the Surfrider Foundation fulfill its mission of protecting and preserving our world’s oceans, waves and beaches.

“We could not have chosen a more deserving group of honorees for our Clean Water Awards,” says Manase Mansur, Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter Chair. “Over the years, Jason, Cali Bamboo and Deputy Mayor Houlihan have continued to help the Surfrider Foundation advance its mission and raise coastal awareness amongst friends, family and the public, and for that we extremely grateful.”

Jason Mraz has called San Diego County home for awhile and like most of us, he loves the coast. In addition to having the last show of his 2009 tour be a fundraiser for non-profits, Jason helps raise awareness for important issues in easy ways such as promoting reusable water bottles. Cali Bamboo has been a big Surfrider supporter through the 1% For The Planet program and currently have a ‘Green Home Challenge’ sustainable building project contest with Surfrider. You can find Cali Bamboo owners and employees at Surfrider events and chapter meetings, they are involved on a personal level. Encinitas Deputy Mayor Maggie Houlihan is a grassroots activist that realized an effective way to fight for issues you believe in is to become an elected official. While Surfrider never endorses politicians we do appreciate all of the general environmental work Maggie has done to help protect the coast.

This photo was captured on a cold winter morning in Oceanside by noted photographer Myles McGuinness. "I swam out about 1/4 mile just before the sun came up (39º air w/ 54º water) without a soul around. The biggest thing to overcome is the deadly water drop on the lens port, which messes up the whole shot and always happens on the best photos. This is one of the gems from that morning where all the elements came together," recalls Myles. The print is 11"x14", a total of 16"x20" with the frame. Sumatra Village

SurfriderSD is stoke to have a few pieces from Wayne Roten for the Art Gala this year including Sumatra Village. "I was born in Los Angeles in the early 50's. My father is a jazz musician and my mother was an opera singer, so from the moment I was brought home from the hospital, all I heard was music all day long, which I think led me into becoming a creative person. We moved to Woodland Hills, California around 1959. The neighborhood I moved into already had an infamous crew of surfers, who rode balsawood boards. I purchased a Dale-Velzey balsa board that almost been broken in half in the Islands. The boys had reshaped it down to 7'11" and pigmented it red. It looked like something you would buy at Toys r Us, however, I learned to surf on it.

It was around this time that I really got interested in art, basically due through reading Rick Grifffen's comics and John Severson's "beatnik" style of painting. At first I tried to copy everything they did, but as I began to study Art at Taft High School, I became enthralled with the masters, such as Dali, H.R. Geiger (of Alien fame) Van Gogh and Warhol and began to develop my own style. I continued my art studies at Cal State and won a few awards for "Most Original" etc."

With a name like that it's got to be good! We are stoked to feature two pieces this year from John Holm. "As a California native I have surfed and painted the coast since the 60's. I am an aficionado of early California painting, especially the Monterey Tonalists. I am also fascinated by the history of the 19th Century coast and the vision of those unridden breaks. The spiritual element of water and the "Brotherhood of the brine" is very compelling to me as a painter." John's work has appeared in Surfers Journal and other surf publications.

We are honored to have a beautiful original framed painting from Jennifer Belote, another long-time Surfrider Art Gala donor. This is an acrylic on masonite painting.

Having grown up in La Jolla California, Jennifer`s love for the ocean started at a very young age. Being scuba certified at age 15, she spent the weekends snorkeling La Jolla Cove and diving the Pt. Loma Kelp Beds.

Jennifer has now dedicated her life to the preservation of the reefs throughout the world by donating a percentage of her profits to ocean organizations. "I believe the coral reefs are in turmoil from over fishing, pollution and ocean front development. We all need to do our part to keep the oceans healthy".

That was my first thought when I saw this stained glass donation from Amber Irwin, a North County resident. A founding member of the Solana Beach Art Association, Amber designed and created the 'Sunburst Of Color' on the Coastal Rail Trail for the city of Solana Beach. She has done private installations for clientele in coastal San Diego, and has had her work displayed in many galleries, including Leaping Lotus, Rock/Paper/Scissors, and Shiva. Her passion is reflected in the themes of her art: love, the elements, and a general celebration of life.

San Clemente native Justin Hawkins makes a first-time appearance as a donor to Surfrider San Diego's annual art gala. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in NYC, Hawkins is currently translating his "passion for surfing into expressionist prints focusing on the dynamics of the figure and its relationship to the sea."
